Urban Chicken Farmers of Bellevue (U.C.F.B.)

Who we are: Local families that have flocked together to make a difference in the community by fighting for the right to keep our chickens in our backyards.

Our Mission: Provide everyone the opportunity to enjoy fresh, hormone-free eggs just like we do.  Raising backyard poultry is a fun and educational learning experience for the whole family.  We are striving to keep our chickens so as not to lose out on valuable life lessons that can be learned through 4H Clubs and Boy Scouts of America.

Fight to save Bellevue Chickens voted down!

The 3rd and final reading to keep backyard poultry resulted in a tie vote at the February 14, 2011 City Council meeting.  This left Rita Sanders to be the end all to the chicken issue.  Rita Sanders did not waver, did not blink an eye and did not hesitate when she easily voted down the keeping of backyard poultry.

However, on December 13, 2010 Rita Sanders stated she was in FAVOR of allowing chickens!  You can find her statement here
If Bellevue's current Mayor is unable to back statements she made nine (9) weeks ago, how is she going to back anything she stated during her campaign?

Here turkey, turkey, turkey....

On any given day you can see a flock of wild turkeys roaming through Bellevue; Old Towne, the Boulevard, Fort Crook Road and 36th Street, just to name a few.  These turkeys have been known to destroy private gardens, flower beds, stop traffic and are just a general pain in the neck.

Now that Bellevue representatives have placed a ban on poultry in any area not deemed AG or RE, they need to follow the laws they have set in motion and rid the city of these wild animals.  After all, the law is the law and poultry is poultry, no matter what breed it is.

You may contact any one of the Bellevue representatives that are against poultry in city limits:

Past Events...

U.C.F.B. went before City Council on September 27, 2010.  90%
of the people present were in favor of chickens so the council
voted to reduce our speaking time from 5 minutes to 3
minutes.  Many of the individuals who spoke were not
permitted the opportunity to finish their statements and
were cut off in the middle of speaking.

U.C.F.B. went before the Planning Commission on Thursday,
August 26, 2010 to state their case.  It was brought to the
Planning Commission's attention that Ordinance 3199
allows t
he keeping of backyard poultry.  However, to date,
the Planning Commission refuses to acknowledge that this
Ordinance exists.

Several local chicken supporters have reported receiving 'unwarranted attention' shortly after placing 'Save Bellevue Chickens' signs in their yards!  However, they say they have nothing to fear because they are not chicken owners, just chicken supporters.  They have also stated they will not allow the City of Bellevue and its representatives to intimidate them into taking down the signs because they are practicing their First Amendment Rights, freedom of expression.

According to Officer Larsen, of the Bellevue Police Department, our driveways are public domain and anyone who works for the City of Bellevue is permitted to take anything out of our driveways because it is public domain and there is nothing we can do about it.  He also stated that because Code Enforcement works for the City of Bellevue, they are permitted on our property any time they FEEL they have probable cause.  Not if they have probable cause, but if they FEEL they have probable cause, and the 'No Trespassing' signs we have posted are irrelevant.

As stated by Bellevue's City Attorney's office, they have spoken to Code Enforcement and Code Enforcement is enforcing the chicken ordinance, they will continue to enforce it and they are not suspending the enforcement.  Which means, the families that have been cited for keeping backyard poultry WILL lose their chickens on the date specified by Code Enforcement.  The representative that I spoke to also stated, "I am not partial to Code Enforcement running around gathering up chickens only to find out later that you can have them."  However, they are on the side of the police and Code Enforcement, not the citizens of Bellevue and will not intervene.
